ANCIENT THRACE AND BULGARIA
Throughout Bulgaria's sorted history several of the greatest civiliztions on Earth have controlled this vital land in the Balkans. From the Mycenaeans in the ancient world to the Soviet Union, each has left their own indelable mark upon the landscape. Bulgaria's neighbors frequently overshadow the small European country such as: Turkey, Greece, Romania, and to some extent Serbia.
The history of Bulgaria is a little shrouded in the unknown, largely due to the past Soviet presence, which forbade any attempt to uncover their ancient roots. Due to this thousands of small hills called "mogili" dot the country and may contain ancient grave sites with vast treasures. The lack of adequate funding has left these mogili uncovered, but at the mercy of treasure hunters. What has been found is what made the Thracians famous, their gold.
Recent discoveries over the past decade have yeilded much in the way of understanding Bulgarian history, however there is still much left to find. The most notabe discovery came in 2000 at the site of Perperikon. This site was the second oracle of the ancient world and rival of Delphi. Coins discovered at the site show that Alexander the Great had visited the site and much later the site was also visited by the Emperor Augustus.
